Engineering Manager - Internal Developer Experience

We’re looking for a technical, hands-on, and mission-driven Engineering Manager to lead an experienced Internal Developer Experience (IDX) team. As the manager responsible for the IDX team reporting into the Senior Manager, Platform Engineering, you will have enormous impact by working directly with engineering teams and departments to remove friction and generate compounding leverage.

This team's mission is provide dependable tools: effective primitives that empower engineering teams to accelerate development and delivery. What you'll be doing

• Lead a team of seven engaged engineers: building autonomy, mastery, and purpose
• Work with internal engineering teams to understand their pain points and set a clear vision to improve the effectiveness of the software development lifecycle
• Build new developer experiences while balancing prioritization of our existing systems such as dev environments, build and test tooling, CI, and client release tooling
• Support the design and delivery of elegant build systems to produce minimized and easy-to-deploy container builds for customers all over Discord
• Own and improve the operational health and processes of our team, including our internal helpdesk

Who You Are

• You have 5+ years of experience as a Software Engineer
• You have 2+ years of experience as an Engineering Manager and successfully managed a team of 3+ Software Engineers
• You are comfortable with many languages such as Python, Rust, Elixir, TS/JS and have a pulse on the surrounding language tooling ecosystems
• You have experience using Bazel as a build system
• You have experience working with many teams and stakeholders and have a track record of elegantly managing and communicating change
• You’ve worked with CI / CD systems like Buildkite, Gitlab, CircleCI, or others
• You are comfortable drafting the roadmap in concert with your senior and staff engineers
• You are passionate about coaching and leading other engineers, but love to code when the opportunity arises
• You get to the heart of issues and lead your team to come up with effective solutions

Bonus Points

• You have experience building and shipping products across multiple client platforms (web, iOS, and Android)
• You have experience with Nix
• You have experience working with Kubernetes
• You have built open source software integrated by other developers.
• You obsess over and nerd out over your own development workflow (keyboards, dotfiles, editors, window managers, etc.)

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $248,000 to $279,000 + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role and level. Within the range, individual pay is determined by additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
