Senior Analyst, Market Design
Electricity markets around the world are transforming.
The AESO is at the forefront of the transformation of the electricity market in Alberta. We are evolving Alberta’s wholesale electricity markets to meet the pressing demands of affordability, reliability, and decarbonization. Join our Market Design team to help shape the market as it adapts to face the challenges of the future.
With a background in economics, engineering or a related subject, you have a strong understanding of the current electricity market framework in Alberta and the changes that will be introduced with REM.
Key aspects of the role:
In this role, you will demonstrate and grow your expertise in economics, business, or engineering to shape the development of Alberta's electricity market. This will be achieved through conducting independent research on economic, technical and policy aspects of market design best practices in other jurisdictions, as well as providing guidance on market analysis activities.
You will identify and develop the details needed to put in place key components of Alberta’s restructured electricity market, evaluating the economic efficiency, market impact, stakeholder effects, and operational implications of market design alternatives
Working closely with colleagues in the Market Design team and other AESO subject matter experts, this position is also responsible for supporting market monitoring and evaluation activities related to the sustainability and evolution of the energy and ancillary services markets.
Leveraging your strong communication and presentation skills, you will act as a primary lead on engagement with external stakeholders as part of market design consultations, and will also be accountable for developing and supporting regulatory applications to the Alberta Utilities Commission.

A minimum of 10 years experience in electricity markets or equivalent
A post-secondary degree in Economics, Engineering or Business. A Master’s or PhD would be considered an asset
Knowledge and willingness to learn about power system optimization and operations in a deregulated electricity market
Familiarity with industry standards, regulations, and compliance requirements in the electrical utility sector.
Excellent communication skills with the ability to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams and communicate complex concepts to non-technical stakeholders
Establishing strong business and technical relationships to facilitate trust and collaboration across team members and partners
Adaptability and resilience to respond to evolving priorities and timelines
Strong business acumen and understanding of competitive electricity markets
Effective risk based decision maker
Experience in regulatory proceedings an asset
