The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) is responsible for the safe, reliable, and economic planning and operation of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System. Our Grid Reliability Operations division is looking for an enthusiastic, self-driven, resourceful individual to join our Grid Reliability Services team in a Business Analyst role.  The successful candidate will be responsible for analyzing business processes, identifying opportunities for improvement, and developing solutions to help drive growth and success for our organization.
As the Business Analyst for Project Management, you will be responsible for delivering on the success of business projects and initiatives within Grid Reliability Services. Over the course of each project, you will gather and analyze information, formulate, and test hypotheses, and develop and communicate recommendations. This includes working closely with experts from a variety of professional backgrounds such as engineers and economists and engaging with various internal teams and departments within the AESO organization.

In this role you will:

  • Analyze business processes and workflows to identify improvement opportunities by gathering and interpreting data, conducting stakeholder interviews, and reviewing existing documentation.

  • Support successful project delivery within Grid Reliability Services by eliciting and managing business requirements, mapping dependencies, and ensuring alignment with strategic objectives.

  • Facilitate stakeholder engagement through workshops, meetings, and collaborative sessions to drive shared understanding and decision-making across diverse professional groups.

  • Apply a solid understanding of AESO's business, systems, and technical landscape to deliver consistent, high-quality outputs using established tools, templates, and frameworks.

  • Produce key BA artifacts aligned with best practices, such as stakeholder analyses, current- and future-state process models, business requirements documents (BRDs), use cases, decision logs, and traceability matrices.

  • Lead or contribute to process improvement initiatives that enhance operational efficiency, effectiveness, and alignment with business goals.

  • Synthesize complex information into clear, actionable recommendations, and communicate findings effectively to stakeholders at all levels through presentations, briefing notes, and reports.

Note: This Business Analyst role is distinct from data, financial, system, or IT analysts. While those roles focus on quantitative data analysis, financial performance, or system configurations, the BA role centers on bridging business needs with technical solutions, facilitating process optimization, and enabling strategic change across the organization.

You have:

  • Completion of a Bachelor's degree in business administration, finance, economics, or a related field: (or equivalent) BA Certification through IIBA or other certifying body desirable.   

  • 7+ years of experience in business analysis or a related field: The successful candidate should have at least 5 years of experience in business analysis or a related field.
