Job Description
BAE Systems is seeking a self-motivated engineering leader to join our Engineering Management team as a Chief Engineer.
As a Chief Engineer, you will be the technical conscience of the program, ensuring the systems, products, and services being developed and delivered are viable, fit for purpose, and will satisfy customer needs, product/system requirements, and the mission and/or application.
In this role, the Chief Engineer is responsible for defining and executing the trades and analyses that result in a hardware baseline, software baseline, and concept of operations, that fulfill customer requirements within a constrained budget and on schedule. The Chief Engineer works across the product lifecycle, including architecture development, trades, requirements analysis, concepts of operation, interfaces, hardware design, software design, integration, validation, and verification.
This role will specifically involve providing process oversight to teams designing and maintaining complex radar systems and other electronics systems.
The Chief Engineer is the primary owner of the technical solution and the technical interface to Program, Manufacturing, Quality, Functional, and Executive leadership.
Key responsibilities include:

  • Understanding and communicating project requirements at the mission level with internal and external customers.
  • Ensuring system design and implementation meet technical requirements and customer/mission needs within allocated engineering cost & schedule.
  • Ensuring system design is realizable, maintainable, supportable and testable.
  • Driving technical risk and opportunity definition, identification, and mitigation/realization.
  • Understanding and communicating radar, RF, electronics, hardware, and software requirements at the engineering level with design teams.
  • Providing technical interface to the customer, program management office, and internal and external executive leadership:
  • Understanding system requirements, missions, use cases, and constraints.
  • Communicating technical risks and issues including impact assessment, mitigation, minimization, and closure plans.
  • Ensuring technical integrity and engineering execution across the programs.
  • Communicating results to program management and customers.
  • Supporting proposal and RFI development activities, including proposal text development, white papers, cost estimating (BOE), and presentation activities.
  • Preparing and delivering customer and technical presentations.
  • Mentoring both formally and informally members of the engineering staff
  • Knowledge transfer to mid-level and junior engineers
  • Participate in Centers of Excellence (CoE) activities, Communities of Practice (CoPs), collaborations across Business Areas, and internal / external engagements
  • Ensure all programs are performing under BAE Systems lifecycle management (LCM) and engineering LCM processes, and participate in BA and sector LCM reviews
  • Contribute to updating and maintaining process and procedures on PDSL

Required Education, Experience, & Skills
Minimum Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree and 10 years work experience.


Required Skills and Education:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills for interfacing, coordinating and negotiating with company personnel, internal and external customers, suppliers and other performers.
  • Technical Skills/Experiences (at least two required): Hardware development, Software development, modeling and simulation development, laboratory and field testing, digital signal processing, systems architecture, RF path modeling & analysis, system link budget analysis, real-time operating systems, model-based engineering.
  • Possess an Active US Government Secret security clearance (with ability to possess TS).
  • Technical leader for significant size team (Chief Engineer, Project Engineering Manager, or equivalent).
  • Experience participating in external forums as a speaker, presenter, panel member, or academic collaborator
  • Experience developing technology roadmaps, and provide technical leadership to engineering labs and initiatives
  • Experience in developing investment proposals for internal R&D (IRAD) projects for presentation to sector leadership, and guiding principal investigators and technical teams to successful execution of IRAD projects

  • Bachelor's of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering or a related engineering discipline and 10+ years of experience.
  • Master of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering or a related engineering discipline and 8+ years of experience.
  • 5 years of experience as a Chief Engineer or equivalent leading development of Radar systems or other large scale electronic systems.
  • Experience with radar system design architecture.
  • Model based systems engineering experience.
  • Active DoD security clearance, with ability to obtain Top Secret, SCI


Pay Information
Full-Time Salary Range: $150370 - $255630
Please note: This range is based on our market pay structures. However, individual salaries are determined by a variety of factors including, but not limited to: business considerations, local market conditions, and internal equity, as well as candidate qualifications, such as skills, education, and experience.
