Reporting to the Team Lead, Commercial, the Commercial Business Analyst will play an important role in providing data-driven insights and analysis to support business development efforts and drive commercial decision-making. 

The role involves conducting in-depth market research and financial modeling, requiring the ability to analyze and synthesize information from large and diverse datasets. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong analytical skills to interpret complex contracts, extract key terms, and accurately implement them into financial models. This role demands the ability to navigate unstructured data, identify relevant insights, and integrate multiple data sources—including industry reports, financial statements, regulatory filings, and contractual agreements—into a cohesive analytical framework. Requiring a strong understanding of oil & gas market fundamentals and the ability to work collaboratively across departments, the ideal candidate will be motivated to join a fast paced, dynamic environment with opportunities to grow competency in the commercial business development area.

Essential Functions:

  • Develop and maintain financial models and forecasting tools to assess the profitability of new business ventures, projects and initiatives.
  • Support the business development team with market analysis within oil and gas.
  • Monitor and report on market trends, changes and competitor activities.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure the successful execution of business development projects.
  • Prepare high quality presentation materials, majority of which are aimed at the leadership levels.

Education and Experience:

  • Minimum Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce, Finance, Engineering, or a related field.
  • CFA, CBV, CPA, or P.Eng designation preferred.
  • 3–5 years in a business analyst or similar role within the oil & gas or energy sector.
  • General understanding of upstream oil and gas industry.
  • Proficient in building financial models.
  • Self-starter thriving on solving problems, learning new things and committed to continuous improvement.
  • Humility, creativity, and positive attitude key personality traits.
  • Proficient in MS Office with advanced Excel skills; familiarity of data visualization tools and business intelligence software is an asset (i.e. Tableau).
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to distill complex data and insights to facilitate efficient decision making.
  • Strong problem solving and critical thinking abilities, with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent communication (oral and written), interpersonal and organization skills.
  • Previous experience or formal training in performing financial analysis and economics.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks under pressure and deliver quality work in a timely manner.
