Lead the evolution of modern infrastructure

WCB Alberta is on a multi-year journey to modernize and optimize our technology ecosystem. We aren't just looking for a technologist; we are looking for a visionary operational leader and a strategic partner to the Chief Technology Officer and the business technology services division.

As the Director of Business Technology Operations, you will lead innovation for your teams within the Business Technology Services  (BTS) division. You will bridge the gap between complex technical infrastructure and high-level business strategy, ensuring that our technology isn’t just optimized for day-to-day but actively drives WCB Alberta toward becoming a technology leader supporting the injured workers and employers of Alberta.

How you’ll make a difference:

Reporting directly to the Chief Technology Officer (CTO), you will serve as a key member of the BTS senior leadership team. You will have full autonomy and accountability over the delivery of essential services, including Application & Cloud Services, Infrastructure Platforms, Network & Telephony, Asset Management & Compliance, and Help Desk & eBusiness Services. We are seeking someone who thrives on high-velocity execution, proactively identifies roadblocks before they occur, and communicates with radical transparency. The overall success of the WCB, including supporting the organization’s strategic and annual business objectives, is heavily influenced by the innovation, reliability and delivery of these services.

Your responsibilities:

  • Drive Innovation: You will proactively identify and implement emerging technologies (AI, cloud automation, virtualization, automation) to enhance service delivery and operational agility.
  • Strategic Communication: You must possess the ability to present complex technical risks and opportunities to non-technical stakeholders in a clear, compelling, and business-friendly manner.
  • Operational Excellence & Accountability: You will be responsible for meeting rigorous deadlines, driving root-cause analysis, and ensuring 99.9% reliability across all platforms.
  • Leadership & Culture: You will identify talent gaps, knowledge management, and create upskilling opportunities that evolve capabilities to match the pace of modern technology.  Further, foster a culture of accountability, and ensure the team is aligned with the broader corporate mission.
  • Financial & Resource Stewardship: Manage multi-million dollar operating and capital budgets, ensuring multi-year procurement decisions align with long-term strategic goals.
  • Strategic Autonomy & Initiative: Exercise a high degree of independence in identifying and resolving operational challenges and proactively developing future-state initiatives.
  • Enterprise Risk & Security Governance: Integrate rigorous cybersecurity standards and IT governance into all operational workflows to ensure that security is a core component of service delivery and disaster recovery.

Your experience and skills:

  • Post-secondary education with a bachelor’s degree or master’s level, or equivalent work experience.
  • Wealth of experience in navigating the intricacies of complex enterprise IT and business landscapes, showcasing 5 - 7 years of significant expertise and achievements in various senior leadership positions.
  • Demonstrate a deep understanding of modern technology stacks (on Prem/Cloud/SaaS, Cybersecurity, Data Platforms) and know how to deploy them to solve business problems
  • A visionary leader who champions employee development initiatives to enhance retention and attraction.
  • Cultivate relationships at all levels through exceptional interpersonal, written communication, and public speaking skills with the ability to explain complex concepts in clear and business-friendly ways, coupled with a poised and engaging demeanor.
  • Understanding the business landscape and modern technologies to deploy solutions that align with business goals is essential.
  • Flexibility to thrive in a dynamic and changing environment, while simultaneously driving positive changes is important.
  • High commitment in providing excellent customer service is a key aspect of this role.
  • Shared responsibility with operational leadership at the director level for project responsibility and strategic planning.
  • Effective decision making and analysis are critical as they can significantly influence the daily operations and the credibility of the department in delivering strategic value across the organization.

What we offer:

We offer a competitive salary, a comprehensive benefits package, flexible work schedules and hybrid work opportunities (combination of work from physical office and primary home residence) that foster a healthy work-life balance. Take the next great step in your career and help us change lives. For more information, please see our Employee Handbook.

Successful candidate must reside in Alberta and be able to work in person from our Edmonton downtown office as required. Final candidates for this position will be required to undergo a security clearance and credit check.
