The Engineering Director will oversee product quality across all lines, enforce quality standards, lead the QA team, and drive automation and testing strategies in a fast-paced SaaS environment.
Small businesses represent 99.9% of all companies, yet they're still forced to choose between clunky, outdated enterprise phone systems or their personal phones. This multi-billion dollar market has been overlooked for decades, left to cobble together solutions that slow them down instead of helping them grow.
Quo is changing that. We bring calls, texts, and customer information together into one easy-to-use, AI-powered platform. We’re not just building a phone system. We’re setting a new standard for how businesses connect with their customers.
Driven by our values, we move fast, build with determination, and obsess over delivering value to the businesses that have been underserved for far too long.
Today, Quo is trusted by more than 90,000 companies and rated #1 in customer satisfaction on G2. We’re backed by Y Combinator, Tiger Global, Craft Ventures, Slow Ventures, and other top-tier investors. It’s safe to say we’re onto something big.
About the roleWe're looking for an Engineering Director who will be the ultimate owner of product quality across all of Quo's product lines — with the authority and organizational backing to enforce standards, block releases, and drive the fixes needed to meet them. The ideal candidate has a strong background in software engineering and test strategy, and a proven track record leading quality programs in fast-moving SaaS environments. They should thrive where initiative, ownership, and high standards aren't just encouraged — they're expected. This is not a purely supervisory role. You will be expected to actively contribute to the activities of the Quality team in all stages of the SDLC. You embrace the Quality Engineering team’s role not only as a check on their peer’s work but also as educators and enablers on testing best practices and methodologies. You actively leverage emerging AI automation technologies to extend the reach of your team.
- Own quality end-to-end. Define and execute the cross-product test strategy — manual and automated — with daily and weekly validation cycles. You are the ultimate accountable party for whether Quo's product ships at the bar our customers expect. That means setting clear quality gates, measuring outcomes, and driving the team and organization to meet them.
- Serve as the final release gatekeeper. You have the explicit authority, backed by senior leadership, to halt any release that doesn't meet quality standards until defects are remediated. You'll balance risk and velocity thoughtfully, but customer trust is never traded away for speed.
- Build and lead the QA team. Hire, coach, mentor, and grow a team of QA Engineers and Quality Ambassadors. Foster a collaborative environment focused on continuous learning and professional growth.
- Drive cross-functional alignment. Partner with product and engineering managers to embed testing discipline into every feature release pipeline. Set expectations early, surface risk clearly, and escalate to senior leadership when standards aren't being met — without waiting to be asked.
- Build the test infrastructure. Drive strategy and adoption of automation frameworks, testing platforms, and CI/CD quality gates that scale with our engineering velocity.
- Champion AI-enabled testing. Lead the team in selecting and deploying automation tools that extend QA reach without sacrificing depth or precision.
- Educate and advocate. Lead learning efforts to ensure test-driven development is adopted uniformly across the engineering organization. Make quality everyone's job, not just QA's.
- Measure and report. Define quality metrics, publish regular dashboards, and lead quality reviews with engineering and product leadership.
- Close the customer feedback loop. Tie production monitoring and support feedback into QA strategy and iteration cycles, ensuring real-world signals inform how we improve.
- Explore the edges. Foster creative, edge-case-focused testing to prevent regressions and drive long-term improvement — especially for our frontier AI-powered products.
About you
- You take full ownership of product quality and are comfortable being the person who says "we're not shipping this" — backed by data, clear criteria, and senior leadership's trust
- You have a track record of exercising release authority, including blocking or delaying releases, and communicating those decisions effectively to engineering and executive stakeholders
- You like balancing hands-on technical oversight with strategic leadership — building both the QA frameworks and the governance structures that give quality decisions real organizational weight
- You're a strong communicator who can align quality priorities across engineering, product, and operations without friction
- You're data-driven: you define the metrics, track them rigorously, and use them to make decisions and hold teams accountable
- You have 7+ years in QA or Software Engineering, with 5+ years in a leadership or managerial role, and proven experience in B2C, SaaS, APIs, or AI/ML platforms
