About the Accounting Team

The Accounting Team is a group of curious and hardworking individuals who are involved in all aspects of the business, ensuring we properly capture, account for, and record all the activities that occur as they occur.  In addition to our high standards for our financials, we are a team that is deeply committed to enabling innovation within the company while following sound policies, procedures and controls.

About the Role 

As the Director of Tax, you’ll have the exciting opportunity to build a function, work across the business, and partner closely with finance, accounting, payroll, legal, product and engineering.  You will integrate yourself within these teams to build deep knowledge of our products and be the subject matter expert on all things tax, including but not limited to, sales & use tax, federal tax, state tax and some international tax, providing guidance to the business in all relevant areas. You’ll get to be a keystone in building out our tax team and will have the opportunity to grow while getting to make a huge impact on a high growth Company.  This individual will report to the VP Corporate Controller, having regular interaction with the Chief Financial Officer and presentations to the Audit Committee,

Responsibilities 

  • Lead and oversee completion of annual federal and state tax returns as well as foreign filings (operations in Canada and the Philippines)
  • Bring quarterly tax provision in-house in accordance with GAAP
  • Own all sales tax returns and build out scalable process
  • Assist with 1099, 3921 and other filings
  • Partner with international team on transfer pricing agreements and studies for foreign subsidiaries
  • Monitor legislative changes that might apply to Thumbtack and be proactive about addressing such changes
  • Responsible for all tax related audits
  • Build out and own strong SOX internal controls over accounting and reporting for significant taxes 
  • Provide proactive advice on tax implications related to business initiatives, M&A activities, and other strategic decisions
  • Collaborate with Finance, Legal, and other cross-functional teams to ensure tax considerations are integrated into business decisions
  • Act as a key point of contact for external tax advisors and regulatory authorities
  • Provide guidance across organization around domestic and international tax, including VAT, HST/GST, sales tax
  • Oversee special projects as required (E&P studies, 382 studies, deferred tax analysis, etc.)
  • Develop a clear tax strategy

  • Self-motivated-able to think independently, creatively, and opportunistically
  • Strong analytical and organization skills, with impeccable attention to detail
  • Passion for cross functional collaboration
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal), organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills
  • A CPA with 10 to 15+ years of experience in accounting,  including public accounting firm experience and publicly traded technology company
  • Proven track record in corporate income tax and indirect tax

Bonus points if you have

  • Experience with Avalara is a plus
  • Domestic and international experience
  • Experience with Marketplace company
  • Experience with a Public company
