The AESO is the sole provider of system access service on the Alberta transmission system, and the AESO Customer Grid Access team is responsible for fulfilling this part of the AESO’s mandate. The Customer Access Studies (CAS) team handles interconnection engineering studies and provides system access to market participants connecting to the Alberta Interconnected Electric System (AIES). With the recent revamp of the interconnection process, customer projects will now be processed in batches as part of Cluster Studies.

As an Engineer in the CAS group, you’ll report to the CAS Manager and work with Lead and Senior Engineers to deliver projects and manage daily tasks. Your responsibilities will include running interconnection studies, providing technical solutions, engineering assessments, and regulatory support. You'll also prepare study reports, review external consultant assessments, and coordinate with Lead Engineers on regional project details.

You’ll guide Engineers-in-Training and collaborate across teams within the AESO, including forecasting, system planning, and regulatory. Externally, you’ll work closely with Transmission and Distribution Facility Owners, developers, large customers, and consultants to support project delivery.

Accountabilities include but are not limited to:

  • Prepare Engineering Study Scope documents for the specific projects within the assigned Cluster (regional area) in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Conduct power flow, stability, and short circuit studies as well as advanced power system analysis studies for the project inter connection using PSS/E software.

  • Perform engineering assessments on the data center projects and analyze/validate their facility parameters.

  • Determine options or alternative solutions for connecting Market Participants to the Alberta transmission network.

  • Determine and justify the selection of the preferred alternative for connection projects based on technical, economic, and impact factors. Prepare and Review Single Line diagrams and documentation for relevant connection alternative selection.

  • Review, comment and accept Distribution Deficiency Reports submitted by Distribution Facility Owners.

  • Analyze system constraints when identified in engineering studies and work with the AESO internal Operations, Planning, Markets, and Project Engineering groups to determine Remedial Action Schemes or mitigation plans within a connection project.

  • Coordinate with the AESO Grid Analytics team in the development of the load and generation forecasts which support the customer access studies.

  • Coordinate with AESO Standards & Modeling team in the development of models which support connection projects and review base case models in PSS/E software.

  • Prepare and authenticate Engineering Connection Assessment, Connection Proposals and collaborate in relevant power system technical assessment.

  • Diligently maintain technical project files.

  • Maintain effective lines of communication with Market Participants to resolve technical issues.

What you’ll bring to us:

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering.

  • Post Graduate Degree in Electrical Power Systems will be an asset.

  • Approximately five to eight years of engineering experience in the electric utility industry, with at least five years of exposure to power systems and distribution planning or operations.

  • Proficiency in PSS/E software.

  • Distribution system planning and detailed design expertise is an asset.
