The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) is responsible for the safe, reliable, and economic planning and operation of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System. We provide open and non-discriminatory access to Alberta’s interconnected power grid and also facilitate Alberta’s competitive wholesale electricity market. Alberta Reliability Standards (ARS) are the requirements followed by the AESO and Alberta market participants to provide for the reliable operation of the Alberta interconnected electric system (AIES). The AESO recommends the adoption of ARS that are based on the reliability standards of the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) and Western Electric Coordinating Council (WECC) as well as other ARS that amend, supplement, or replace these reliability standards.
We are looking for an engineer or analyst to coordinate and guide cross-functional teams to develop ARS for Alberta’s electricity industry. The seniority level will be defined based on the successful candidate's experience and qualifications. This is a great opportunity for a professional with broad knowledge of high voltage facilities, transmission system operations, and protection & control systems to lead and participate in stakeholder engagements with external industry working groups.
This full-time opportunity offers a competitive salary, and a variable pay program. We support a hybrid work environment, where the team is in the office on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Mondays and Fridays are flexible for where you work best.
Key accountabilities:

  • Facilitate internal and external technical working groups related to ARS development to drive consensus and innovation.

  • Draft reliability standards, supporting documentation, and stakeholder engagement materials.

  • Coordinate and support stakeholder engagement processes to ensure transparency and collaboration.

  • Represent AESO in North American standards discussions, contributing to the evolution of reliability practices.

  • Monitor and report on NERC and WECC developments to inform Alberta’s strategic direction.

  • Provide guidance during implementation and compliance monitoring phases of the ARS lifecycle.

  • Conduct research and analysis to support the development of new standards and enhancements.

  • Support the Reliability Standards Sync Up Project, ensuring effective integration of reliability standards in the Alberta electricity industry.

A combination of these skills and experiences will set you up for success in this role:

  • At least four years of experience as an electrical industry professional working with transmission system asset management, facilities design, real-time operations, or regulatory compliance monitoring.

  • Demonstrated aptitude in internal and external relationship building, group facilitation, and stakeholder engagement experience. The ability to guide large engagements in decision making in a variety of environments ranging from collaborative to oppositional is essential.

  • Applied use of project and program management and administration tools, including understanding of cost impact with regulatory requirements.

  • Working knowledge of electricity industry rules and standards, compliance monitoring, and audit process.
