The Engagement team owns the features that make Mural useful for teams to collaborate—the behaviors that turn solo exploration into shared work. Among the features we support: comments, threading, sharing, recommendations, and notifications. This is a team with room to shape its direction, working on problems that directly impact whether users come back and bring their teammates.
YOUR MISSION
As Engineering Manager for Engagement, you will own the systems that drive recurring usage and team expansion—two of the most important levers for Mural's long-term success. You will lead a team of ~5 engineers to ship features that measurably increase DAU/MAU and workspace growth, working in tight partnership with Product and Design to understand what actually moves users from occasional visitors to daily collaborators. You will be the technical lead for your team, accountable for the quality of what ships while staying close enough to the work to provide meaningful direction. Most importantly, you will establish clear ownership of conversion metrics and build a team culture oriented around outcomes, not output.
WHAT YOU'LL DOOwn engagement metrics end-to-end: Establish your team's ownership of key conversion metrics that drive recurring engagement—DAU/MAU, team expansion, workspace growth. You're accountable for whether the needle moves, not just whether features ship.
Lead technical execution on high-impact features: Drive improvements to comments/threading, simplify sharing flows, and make notifications and recommendations actually useful. Stay hands-on (30-40% coding time) on exploratory or off-critical-path work while ensuring your team isn't blocked on you.
Lead and grow a high-performing team: Hiring, retaining, and motivating strong engineers are high-leverage activities—invest in them accordingly. Set clear expectations, give feedback early, and create an environment where your team does their best work.
Partner with Product and Design as equals: The triad collectively owns outcomes. Work collaboratively to understand what drives users from solo exploration to team collaboration—no handoffs, no waterfall, early and continuous involvement.
Set and model high expectations for AI adoption: AI-driven development is not optional at Mural. Model and drive effective adoption of AI tools throughout the entire delivery lifecycle.
Deep technical expertise: 5+ years shipping production code, ideally fullstack Node.js/TypeScript. Strong engineers from other modern stacks who can adapt quickly are welcome.
Engineering leadership experience: 2+ years managing engineering teams of at least 3 ICs. Track record of building high-performing teams that deliver complex projects—and holding the bar when they don't.
Ownership mentality: You advocate for what's best for the business, own problems end-to-end (not just the parts in your team's boundaries), and lead with accountability rather than blame when things go wrong.
Ruthless prioritization: Proven ability to edit scope to the smallest shippable increment that provides meaningful feedback. You don't prematurely scale or over-engineer—you get feedback early and often.
An outcome-oriented and highly experimental interest in AI-driven development practices. You're actively using AI tools in your own work and can credibly push your team to do the same.
Experience with WebSocket or real-time collaboration systems (we have robust infrastructure, but familiarity helps)
Background in engagement, retention, or growth-oriented product work
Experience with globally distributed teams and async-first collaboration
