Job Description:

Summary:

Barr is seeking a geochemist to join its growing geochemical practice and undertake challenging and progressive work on projects related to resource development; waste and mine water management; and the investigation, evaluation, and remediation of contaminated sites. Assignments may include working as an individual or as part of a project team to assist with environmental site assessments; investigations of contaminated soil, sediment, groundwater, surface water, and vapor; waste rock characterization studies; geochemical data analysis; development of qualitative and quantitative geochemical models; and preparation of technical reports. Geochemical data analysis will require specific knowledge of low-temperature systems, environmental geochemistry, mechanisms of metal mobility and retardation, and the weathering zone. On-site investigation tasks may include observing drilling and monitoring well installation, classifying soil and bedrock samples, and collecting samples for field screening and laboratory analysis.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in geology, geochemistry, hydrogeology, or a related field

  • 6 or more years of practical experience in the geochemistry field

  • Academic coursework directly related to the job responsibilities described above and successful completion of a field or research course

  • Specific experience with building and interpreting thermodynamic equilibrium geochemical models (e.g., PHREEQC, WATEQF, MIN3P, Geochemist’s Workbench)

  • Experience with geochemical testing methods for water chemistry

  • Specific knowledge of low-temperature systems, environmental geochemistry, and the weathering zone (e.g., chemical reactions, mineral solubility)

  • Familiarity with statistical methods

  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with project team members, regulators, and clients

  • Strong technical and problem-solving skills

  • Attention to detail, accuracy, and completeness

  • Strong computer skills, including word processing and use of spreadsheets, and willingness to learn new applications

  • A flexible working style and the ability to work independently and with teams of specialists to meet client and project needs

  • Legal authorization to work in Canada without the need for sponsorship from Barr, now or in the future

  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in geology, geochemistry, hydrogeology, environmental science, or a related field

  • Coursework related to groundwater flow and transport

  • P.Geo. or P.Eng. licensure or ability to obtain licensure within one year

  • Experience in environmental consulting

  • Familiarity with environmental regulations

  • Experience with mineralogical characterization methods, instrumentation, analysis, and interpretation

  • Experience with statistical software for environmental applications (R, Python, Minitab, Sanitas, ProUCL, VSP, etc.)

  • Knowledge of isotope geochemistry

  • Willingness to travel and periodically adjust personal schedule to meet project needs (approximately 25% fieldwork expected; project needs will vary seasonally and over time)

A hybrid or remote work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office; a remote arrangement refers working primarily from a home office. This position can be based out of Barr's Calgary, Alberta, or Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, offices. Remote arrangements will be considered based on candidate qualifications, location requirements, and Barr’s needs.

NOTE: Some work locations may feature rough terrain typical of construction sites and may also require entering and working in facilities that include limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities. Job assignments may involve work on waste disposal sites and sites requiring cleanup of hazardous materials. An OSHA-mandated physical exam may be required. Safety training will be provided. Applicants may be asked to participate in a drug screening program at the request of specific clients.
