The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) is responsible for the safe, reliable, and economic planning and operation of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System. Reporting to the Director, Core Business Solutions, the Manager, Business Solution Services is a key leadership role responsible for elevating how the AESO plans, delivers, and sustains its business applications. This position is ideal for a leader who excels in program delivery, technical oversight, and team development, and is motivated by the opportunity to shape enterprise-wide outcomes. 

 

In this role you will lead the software development function and drive the maturity of the AESO’s CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices, ensuring application delivery is efficient, predictable, and high quality. You will also oversee complex, multiyear programs that span the full lifecycle of AESO applications, including maintenance, enhancements, modernization and new solution development. 

 

Success in this role requires bringing clarity to complex delivery environments and effectively managing relationships across employees, consultants, and third-party providers. Programs will run smoothly, risks will be identified early, and teams will have clear priorities that support confident, consistent delivery. Under your leadership, the AESO’s application ecosystem will be more resilient, modern, and scalable, directly contributing to the reliability of Alberta’s electricity system. 

 

Accountabilities include but are not limited to: 

  • Lead and develop the software development team as their functional manager, fostering a high performing, collaborative, and growth-oriented culture.  

  • Advance DevOps and CI/CD capabilities, driving improvements in automation, quality engineering, and delivery speed across all AESO applications and accountable teams.  

  • Oversee application lifecycle programs, ensuring maintenance, enhancements, modernization initiatives and production support are strategically planned, resourced, and executed.  

  • Provide end to end program management for major business solution initiatives, supporting the PM with planning, budgeting, risk management, stakeholder engagement, and delivery oversight.  

  • Manage program and operational budgets, with oversight on project financials, ensuring financial transparency, cost effectiveness, and alignment with organizational priorities.  

  • Strengthen business relationship management, acting as a trusted partner to business leaders to understand needs, shape solution roadmaps, forecast and facilitate the approval of roadmap budget needs, and ensure delivery outcomes meet expectations.  

  • Coordinate delivery in a matrixed environment, deploying development resources across multiple programs and projects while maintaining technical consistency and team cohesion.  

  • Ensure delivery excellence, using structured governance, clear metrics, and proactive issue management to keep initiatives on track and aligned with enterprise standards.  

  

What you’ll bring to us: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree of Computer Sciences, Business, or a related discipline. 

  • Project Management Professional (PMP) designation, or equivalent formal project delivery training and certification. 

  • Program Management certification or training is an asset. 

  • A combination of education and relevant experience may be considered. 

  • 10+ years of leadership experience in a matrixed environment, working with employees, consultants, and delivery partners.  

  • Proven experience in project, program and portfolio management. 

  • Strong business relationship managementcapabilities. 

  • Demonstrated success leading information technology programs and implementing new business capabilities and technologies. 

  • Experience delivering results in environments with significant business complexity, political considerations, and diverse stakeholder objectives.  

  • Exceptional leadership, communication and interpersonal skills. 

  • Strong skills in risk management, estimation, problem solving and issue resolution. 

  • Effective negotiation and facilitation abilities.     

  • Hands-on experience in modern software development technologies and methodologies an asset.
