Our Load Forecasting and Market Analytics team is looking for a Market Fundamentals Analyst. We will consider the successful candidates’ experience and qualifications when determining the appropriate seniority level.
In this role, you will lead and support a variety of initiatives related to developing and supporting energy consumption (load) modeling and conducting assessments of fundamental drivers of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System (AIES). You will be involved in modernizing both our short and long term load forecasting models, developing hourly projections for the short term Alberta Load forecast, Long-term Outlook and ad-hoc analysis, assessing impact of electrification and decarbonization policies and industry trends, conducting and presenting research and analysis of emerging trends in the Alberta market and grid operations, and collaborating with other teams within Markets and Grid Reliability.
This full-time opportunity offers a competitive salary, and a variable pay program. We support a hybrid work environment, where the team is in the office on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Mondays and Fridays are flexible for where you work best.

Key aspects of the role:

  • Develop and support the modernization and development of short term and long-term load forecast by collecting and analyzing historical load, developing and applying forecasting methodologies and algorithms, implementing forecasting and visualization processes, evaluating and validating modeling accuracy, communicating and reporting to relevant decision-makers and stakeholders, updating documentation and keeping track of maintenance cycles.
  • Conduct research on impacts to the AIES due to electrification of different economic sectors and technology adoption pathways using economic decision modeling and propose methodologies for integrating into main load forecasting model.
  • Monitor and analyze load forecast drivers such as policy measures, market rules, emission regulations, market trends, capital cost curves, and other relevant market fundamentals.
  • Develop market fundamental assessments by using technical skills (e.g., SQL, Python) to blend data and analytics with economic theory and principles relevant to the Alberta wholesale electricity market.
  • Forecasting: Experience with ARIMA and regression models for predictive modeling.
  • Explore and define opportunities for process improvement and implement approved changes in a collaborative manner.
  • Maintain and build key internal and external stakeholder relationships.
  • Promote collaboration and teamwork and share information, ideas, and knowledge.

A combination of these experiences and qualities will support your success in this role:

  • 1-5 years of experience in a load forecasting, energy market fundamentals, and/or complex system modeling role is preferred; relevant graduate studies (thesis or practicum) work could be considered as part of the experience requirement.
  • A bachelor’s degree in Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Engineering, Economics, Business, Computer Science, Energy Management or relevant data science/predictive analytics discipline. A graduate degree in these fields will be considered an asset.
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving skills, particularly hourly-level modelling experience incorporating spreadsheets, databases, statistical software or programming languages is an asset.
  • Python Proficiency: Hands-on experience with Pandas, NumPy, SciPy, and scikit-learn for time series analysis and modeling.
  • SQL Skills: Experience working with MS SQL Server, MySQL, or other relational databases to extract and analyze time series data.
  • Data Visualization: Experience with Matplotlib, Seaborn, and Plotly for time series visualization, including trend lines, moving averages, and seasonal decomposition.
  • Business Intelligence: Familiarity with Power BI, Tableau, or other BI tools for creating interactive time series dashboards.
  • Statistical Analysis: Understanding of time series decomposition, autocorrelation, stationarity tests (ADF, KPSS), and smoothing techniques (exponential, rolling windows).
  • Excel Expertise: Advanced skills in pivot tables and time-based formulas. 
  • Forecasting Models: Experience with Metrix IDR and ND or other energy modelling/forecasting tools.
  • Power systems operations and electricity market understanding is desirable.
