The Opportunity
Our Media Relations team is looking to add an #EnergyProblemSolver to the team, based in Calgary, AB. We need someone with the proven skills, competencies and capacity to collaborate across communications, external relations and other corporate functions to assist with the execution of communications strategies and proactive/reactive media relations.
Reporting to the Senior Manager, Media Relations and Channel Marking, we are seeking a well-rounded communications professional with media relations experience who will support the team in a variety of capacities, including coordinating and distributing news releases; managing media inquiries and formulating responses; monitoring and reporting on media coverage; assisting at events; creating content for digital and corporate materials; interpretating analytics; and conducting research and writing content.
What you will do
- Monitor, assess and triage incoming media inquiries
- Assist in the development of proactive media relations plans and pitches / media response plans for issues and initiatives
- Maintain message library, including developing templated approved messaging
- Day-to-day management of the traditional media monitoring/news briefs dissemination and media analysis
- Coordinate and disseminate news releases and media advisories
- Write for a variety of clients and audiences: news releases, newsroom statements, social media posts, web updates, articles, stories, fact sheet/material development
- Reporting of media relations team analytics and insights
- Assist in crisis and emergency response, reputation and issues management
- Peer/Industry analysis and research as required
- Support in the coordination and facilitation of corporate media training
- Support in the development of tools and templates
- Work cross-functionally within Communications, External Relations and the broader company to support business objectives
- Serve as a member of the on-call team and may require early morning, evening and weekend work at times
Minimum Qualifications
- Post-secondary Education in a related field (journalism, broadcasting, communications, business or related field specialty)
- Two years of related experience
- Experience in media relationship management or demonstrated relationships with news media
- Demonstrated plugged in news consumer on top of issues, storylines and future headlines
- Experience in crisis management and working with senior leaders
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience analyzing data and metrics to make data driven decisions
- Prior experience in the energy industry and corporate media relations
This position requires candidates to:
- Be available for on-call support/rotation to manage media line
- Have current, valid authorization to travel internationally (including but not limited to Canada, US and Mexico)
