Principal Associate, Product Designer
Position Summary
The Senior Product Designer plays an important role in crafting digital experiences for Capital One Canada. The Senior Product Designer has the opportunity to apply their knowledge to real world product and user-centric design challenges. They are a leader and influencer in the design space and drive design practices to solve challenging business problems and customer needs.
Projects range from improving existing products to building new ones from the ground up. Work ranges from information architecture to refined user interface design. Knowledge ranges from design research into high-fidelity mocks, service design and interaction design. Design artifacts created include site maps, workflows, low to high fidelity wireframes, icons, transitional animation specs, functional prototypes and other interface components. This role works closely with product managers, developers, scrum masters and other designers to refine experiences, improve usability, expand on style guidelines, navigation solutions, and solve various UX problems.
Responsibilities
A Senior Product Designer identifies an existing problem, offers the best possible solution, and collaborates with development to launch it to market. Digital product design is an iterative design process used to solve a functional problem with a formal solution.
- Work alongside business partners, design and data teams to define, solve, and implement innovative solutions for the product direction, visuals and experience.
- Understand our users, leveraging rigorous design research and usability principles as well as their intuitive design sense.
- Brainstorm, propose and design creative solutions that bring our products to another level.
- Act as design owner through conception, build and release of features.
- Help design the UI architecture (High fidelity), interface, interaction workflows, wireframes, and mockups to effectively communicate interaction and design ideas through consideration of business requirements and technical limitations.
- Support design strategists and design researchers in the creation of wireframes, high fidelity mockups and production art assets.
- Develop and maintain detailed UI specifications and design systems.
- Demonstrate how to create elegant digital experiences that delight our customers every step of the way.
- Strong partnership with the product owner in developing intent, while understanding developmental constraints.
- Independently and accurately frame problems based on business and customer needs.
- Fully autonomous in leading discovery work with minimal guidance/support.
- Adapts design methodologies for unique project needs.
- Effective at bringing other disciplines along the design process and educating them along the way.
- Typically spans experience design across multiple products as well as customer journeys across the org.
- Operates at both the execution and strategic level; has mastered both and is able to easily switch between strategic and executional work.
- Leads, plans and facilitates design workshops fully autonomously.
- Demands success metrics be defined and drives discussions with product owners on these success metrics.
- Effectively design solutions based on both business and customer goals.
- Active player in driving design team culture by planning and leading initiatives to engage the design team.

Education and Experience
- 5+ years of Product Design experience with consumer and mobile products.
- 1+ year experience leading Jr. Designer(s) preferable.
- Deep understanding of design principles.
- Experience working with tools for design and prototyping (Figma, Sketch, Axure, Invision, Adobe Creative Suite, JIRA)
- A strong command of brand design and/or visual design.
- Proven proficiency in insight-driven decision making (from data and user behavior).
- Strong design foundation in both UI (interaction, visual, accessibility) and UX (user research, analysis, information architecture, wireframing).
Skills Required
- Open, persuasive, engaging
- Finessed presentation skills (presentation decks and speaking).
- Highly influential in consistently selling teams on design solutions through storytelling and context setting.
- Strong in both core and extended skills.
- Ability to both provide and receive design criticism constructively, and appreciation for its importance within the design process.
