ERM is seeking an outstanding professional to join our Vancouver, BC, or Calgary, AB office as an Environmental Subject Matter Expert - Ecology to support our Mining and Energy teams.  

As a member of the team, you will act as a technical leader in western Canada, with capacity to conduct work in other jurisdictions across Canada. Work will include technical aspects in support of ERM projects in the mining and energy sectors. Tasks include supporting and organizing projects and associated deliverables for the terrestrial biodiversity team (e.g., vegetation and wetland scopes of work), acting as a liaison between project management and technical teams, interacting with clients and subcontractors, and tracking schedules and budgets. Technical tasks include acting as a QP in your respective field (e.g., vegetation and wetland biology) to coordinate and support the execution of field-based programs from a primarily office-based position. The successful applicant will have direct exposure to construction projects, environmental assessments, and mitigation planning as it relates to implementation of federal and provincial policies. More broadly, the applicant must show an interest in applying knowledge and skills to help our clients solve complex challenges in these sectors. RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support the management of relevant aspects of large and complex projects on time and budget including elements such as scope and delivery requirements, budgeting, resourcing, planning, coordinating work, and managing health, safety and risk aspects.
  • On a project-basis, act as client point of contact and support an inter-disciplinary team with environmental impact assessment and regulatory permitting (e.g., baseline studies, facility siting and routing studies, land use planning, mitigation), as well as environmental compliance services during construction, commissioning, start-up, and operations.
  • Support the coordination of field programs, including logistics (e.g., accommodations, travel) and resources (e.g., field personnel, assistants, equipment).
  • Support preparation of proposals, including development of scopes and cost estimates, and participate in business development with existing clients and identified leads.
  • Act as a QP (in your relevant field) in support of field teams, assisting with decision making processes, triaging of requests, and information sharing across ERM and client teams.
  • Work on multiple projects within client’s scope/budget/schedule expectations and ensure quality standards on project deliverables.
  • Build strong collaborative relationships with other ERM employees worldwide.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • B.Sc. degree in Sciences, Environmental Engineering or related field. M.Sc. preferred.
  • 10+ years of environmental consulting experience; prior experience in government, and/or mining or oil and gas sectors are considered assets.
  • Knowledge of relevant subject matter and associated operational mitigation measures (e.g., construction and wildlife or vegetation management).
  • Expertise with Federal, Provincial and Territorial regulations and guidelines pertaining to survey methodologies, environmental assessments, and compliance.
  • Holds relevant professional designation, or immediate eligibility.
  • Strong commitment to safety, including following established health and safety protocols.
  • Ability to lead, follow directions, and take initiative when required.
  • Excellent communication, organizational and time management skills.
  • Proven people and project management skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines in a demanding work environment.
  • Valid driver’s license and good driving record.

For the Sr. Ecologist position, we anticipate the annual base pay of $109,733 - $139,883 CAD.  An employee’s pay position within this range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, geographic location, performance, shift, travel requirements, sales or revenue-based metrics, and business or organizational needs.  We also may have instances where compensation may be outside of the range, based on the factors noted above.  This job is also eligible for an annual discretionary based performance bonus.
