The Role

We are looking for a Counsel for Block's Privacy Legal team to help us support the Square business. You will have the chance to be at the forefront of privacy and data protection issues, influencing how we protect user data and ensure compliance across diverse jurisdictions. You Will

  • Provide expert legal advice on privacy and data security matters to and in collaboration with all partners, including our information security and engineering teams, product development teams, marketing, and human resources, helping them navigate the complexities of compliance.
  • Remain up-to-date on relevant consumer protection, privacy and data security laws and regulations, industry approaches to privacy program management, and on privacy and security technological developments, threat vectors, and evolving industry standards to provide solutions to complex issues.
  • Support the response to data privacy incidents, including breach notification and mitigation strategies, to minimize impact and maintain trust.
  • Collaborate with the global legal team to align privacy practices across the company, ensuring a unified approach to data protection.
  • Support global AI governance, helping the business teams continue to innovate responsibly.
  • Work with teams to scope and perform periodic data privacy hygiene assessments, mitigation and remediation, including data privacy by design and default, accountability and compliance monitoring, and the mitigation of privacy and security risks.
  • Help enhance the existing global privacy program, including: privacy operations and documentation; employee training on data privacy and security obligations, promoting a culture of awareness and compliance throughout the organization.; policy enforcement; privacy compliance program monitoring and auditing; and third-party risk assessment. Ensure the program's ongoing and efficient operation.
  • Update privacy notices and disclosures, and manage/update internal policies and procedures to ensure compliance with global laws bearing on privacy and cybersecurity.


You Have

  • J.D. (or foreign equivalent) and active membership in at least one state bar.
  • 5+ years of combined relevant experience as a practicing attorney, in a law firm, government agency, or in-house legal team, with a substantial number of those years focused on privacy and data protection.
  • Subject matter expertise regarding global privacy and cybersecurity laws and regulations (including, among others, U.S. state laws and international data protection frameworks, GLBA, the EU's GDPR and AI Act, and SEC and NYDFS cybersecurity requirements).
  • Strategic vision and ability to spot issues and communicate complex legal issues to a variety of legal and non-legal partners across the company.
  • Experience negotiating, drafting, and updating documents and policies.
  • A collaborative mindset and ability to work with teams across different cultures and time zones.

Block takes a market-based approach to pay, and pay may vary depending on your location. U.S locations are categorized into one of four zones based on a cost of labor index for that geographic area. The successful candidate's starting pay will be determined based on job-related skills, experience, qualifications, work location, and market conditions. These ranges may be modified in the future.
