The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) is responsible for the safe, reliable, and economic planning and operation of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System. Reporting to the Director, Finance, the Procurement Specialist plays a key role in driving corporate procurement practices that support organizational objectives. In this role, you lead sourcing and supplier management activities, champion procurement initiatives, and advance cost-optimization efforts. You also help mitigate supply-chain risk and serve as a trusted advisor to internal stakeholders across the organization.  

Additionally, you are responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining centralized procurement processes, controls, governance, and reporting for operational excellence in corporate procurement activities 

 

This full-time opportunity offers a competitive salary, and a variable pay program. We support a hybrid work environment, where the team is in the office on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Mondays and Fridays are flexible for where you work best.  

 

Accountabilities include but are not limited to: 

  • Lead end-to-end procurement strategies for high-value, complex, or mission-critical categories.  

  • Develop sourcing strategies aligned with organizational goals, risk appetite, and budget requirements.  

  • Manage competitive bid processes (RFPs, RFQs, RFIs) including evaluation and award recommendations.  

  • Identify and implement initiatives that reduce costs, create value, and optimize supplier portfolios. 

  • Lead supplier negotiations for pricing, contract terms, service levels, and risk provisions. 

  • Manage strategic supplier relationships, including performance metrics, scorecards, and business reviews. 

  • Oversee contract development, renewals, amendments, and dispute resolution   

  • Address and mitigate supply chain risks, including continuity planning and vendor dependency   

  • Act as a senior advisor to business leaders on procurement strategy and commercial decisions   

  • Partner with Finance, Legal, Operations, and business units to align procurement outcomes with organizational priorities. 

  • Provide analytical insights and recommendations to influence decision-making. 

  • Ensure compliance with procurement policies, ethical standards, and applicable regulatory requirements   

  • Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of procurement policies, tools, and processes   

  • Support audit activities and produce senior level reporting on procurement performance     

  • Mentor junior procurement team members and provide functional guidance as required. 

  

What you’ll bring to us: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Business, Finance, or a related field (or equivalent experience).  

  • Professional certification such as CPSM, CIPS, CPP, or equivalent is considered an asset. 

  • 15+ years of progressive procurement or strategic sourcing experience; experience in the electricity industry is an asset. 

  • Demonstrated experience building, implementing, or overseeing a corporate procurement function within a medium-to-large organization. 

  • Proven commercial acumen, advanced negotiation skills, and the ability to influence senior levels.  

  • Proven success managing complex negotiations and highvalue contracts. 

  • Strong understanding of commercial terms, risk management, and contract law concepts.   

  • High attention to detail and strong adherence to compliance requirements. 

  • Sound judgment in dealing with highly sensitive and confidential information.  

  • Advanced analytical skills, including the ability to interpret spend data and market trends. 

  • Deep expertise with using ERP and procurement systems to support sourcing and reporting.   

  • Experience with complex procurement and commercial agreements and transactions.  

  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain strong internal and external relationships to support effective procurement processes and protocols. 

  • Experience leading category strategies or enterprise-wide sourcing initiatives.   

  • Background working in regulated industries (public sector, healthcare, energy, utilities, etc.). 

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.  

  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
