The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) is responsible for the safe, reliable, and economic planning and operation of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System. The Reliability Requirements team has a focus on the future reliability of Alberta’s electric system in the areas of system strength, frequency stability, and flexibility. As the complexity of the system and associated ISO rules and Alberta reliability standards increases, the AESO requires expertise in these areas to ensure sound guidance to internal and external parties.

Reporting to the Manager, Reliability Requirements & Market Support, we are looking for a Senior Engineer to support reliability through the interpretation and application of ISO rules and Alberta reliability standards. In this position, you will provide guidance and perform engineering studies with respect to ancillary services and their integration into the restructured energy market.
This full-time opportunity offers a competitive salary, and a variable pay program. We support a hybrid work environment, where the team is in the office on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Mondays and Fridays are flexible for where you work best.

Accountabilities include but are not limited to:

  • Provide subject matter expertise to internal teams and external stakeholders on AESO technical rules, reliability standards, and compliance requirements.

  • Support stakeholder inquiries, including information requests (IRs) and review waiver/variance applications to technical requirements.

  • Support grid reliability by completing engineering studies and guidance, including:

    • System studies in steady-state, angular stability, frequency stability, voltage stability, and electromagnetic transients (EMT).

    • Participate in the development of ancillary services.

    • Perform data analysis to support system reliability.

  • Contribute engineering expertise to AESO’s Restructured Energy Market (REM) strategy, including reserve integration within new market constructs.

  • Maintain documentation of methods and practices.

  • Collaborate with customers to resolve issues, explain methodologies, and evaluate policy changes.

  • Mentor and train engineers and team members to support quality outcomes and business objectives.

What you’ll bring to us:

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or equivalent work experience.

  • Registered with or eligible to be registered with APEGA.

  • 10+ years’ experience or more in the field of power generation and transmission engineering, operations, and regulatory support.

  • Ability to understand, interpret, develop or modify ISO technical rules and reliability standards for power generation and ancillary services.

  • Experience in power system modeling, validation, and studies using tools such as PSS/E and PSCAD.

  • Proficiency in object-oriented programming (preferably Python) and data querying with SQL or Oracle databases.

  • Familiarity with operational tools like EMS and MMS.

  • Knowledge of ancillary service products and deliverability constraints.
