THE OPPORTUNITY

This is a senior HR Generalist role at the heart of how Big Viking Games takes care of its people. Reporting directly to the COO, you'll support the full HR function across recruiting, onboarding, culture, retention, and workforce planning. You'll be someone who can roll up their sleeves to keep things running smoothly, but also someone who notices what isn't working and brings ideas to the table.

We're looking for someone with solid HR fundamentals, good instincts, and the ambition to grow. You'll work closely with the COO to make sure the people side of the business is healthy, organized, and moving in the right direction.

WHAT YOU'LL OWN

Talent Acquisition

  • Support recruiting efforts across all roles, partnering with the COO and department heads on hiring needs
  • Manage the hiring process end-to-end: job postings, candidate coordination, interview scheduling, offer logistics, and onboarding handoff
  • Manage and direct contract recruiters, setting clear KPIs and holding the function accountable to targets
  • Build and maintain a strong employer brand and candidate pipeline in a competitive talent market

Employee Experience & Retention

  • Own and drive the company's eNPS (Employee Net Promoter Score) program — design survey cadence, analyze results, identify themes, and build action plans that actually move the needle
  • Translate eNPS and engagement data into concrete recommendations for leadership, with clear owners and timelines
  • Partner with the COO to develop and execute a retention strategy for key talent, with particular focus on flight-risk identification and proactive intervention
  • Support employee onboarding to accelerate time-to-productivity and set new hires up for long-term success
  • Champion a high-trust, high-performance culture across remote and in-person team members

HR Operations & Compliance

  • Maintain HRIS integrity and own all HR data reporting: headcount, attrition, engagement trends, and workforce metrics
  • Oversee employment lifecycle administration, including onboarding, offboarding, role changes, and leave management
  • Ensure compliance with Canadian employment standards across all provinces where employees are located
  • Support payroll coordination and benefits administration in partnership with Finance and external providers

Growing the Function

  • Bring a critical eye to existing HR processes and surface concrete recommendations to the COO on where the function can improve
  • Actively seek out opportunities to streamline workflows and introduce better tooling, including AI-assisted solutions where they add genuine value
  • Grow into broader ownership of people programs over time, commensurate with demonstrated impact

Requirements

WHAT YOU BRING

  • 7+ years of HR experience in a generalist or HR operations role
  • Demonstrated experience owning eNPS, engagement surveys, or equivalent culture measurement programs - including turning results into action
  • Track record of influencing senior leadership on people strategy; comfortable presenting data and recommendations to a COO or CEO
  • Deep knowledge of Canadian employment law and multi-provincial HR compliance
  • Experience with HRIS platforms (BambooHR, Rippling, Workday, or similar) and ATS tools
  • Data-literate: you track metrics, build dashboards, and let the numbers guide decisions
  • Excellent judgment and discretion - you handle sensitive situations with maturity and care
  • Thrives in a lean, fast-moving environment where structure isn't always pre-built

NICE TO HAVE

  • Hands-on experience deploying agentic AI solutions to HR workflows
  • Background in gaming, tech, or consumer mobile - you understand creative, product-driven cultures
  • Experience building or restructuring a People function from the ground up
  • CHRP or CHRL designation

Benefits
  • Comprehensive health and wellness benefits
  • Generous PTO and holidays

What you need to know about the Calgary Tech Scene

Employees can spend up to one-third of their life at work, so choosing the right company is crucial, not just for the job itself but for the company culture as well. While startups often offer dynamic culture and growth opportunities, large corporations provide benefits like career development and networking, especially appealing to recent graduates. Fortunately, Calgary stands out as a hub for both, recognized as one of Startup Genome's Top 100 Emerging Ecosystems, while also playing host to a number of multinational enterprises. In Calgary, job seekers can find a wide range of opportunities.
