About the role:

Samsara’s Legal Team strives to create value and ensure that Samsara meets its mission by providing accessible and business-oriented legal guidance. We do so through creative problem solving, excellence and transparency in execution, while exhibiting good judgment in providing ethical and empathetic partnership across the business.

Samsara is looking for a highly experienced Senior Intellectual Property Litigation Counsel to join our dynamic team. You will be responsible for leading and managing complex IP litigation matters, including patent, trademark, copyright, and trade secret disputes, to safeguard and advance Samsara’s interests. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams, including engineering, product, and leadership, to provide strategic advice on intellectual property risk management and enforcement strategies. You will oversee external counsel, ensure litigation aligns with company goals, and contribute to the development of Samsara’s IP portfolio. The position requires a high degree of self-sufficiency, strong analytical skills, extensive litigation experience, and a proactive approach to problem-solving.  The ideal candidate is also willing to jump in to assist their colleagues on any project, large or small, regardless of whether it falls within their scope of expertise.

This is a remote position open to candidates residing in the US except the San Francisco Bay Area and NYC Metro Area. Relocation assistance will not be provided for this role.

In this role, you will: 

  • Partner with the legal team, outside counsel, and other stakeholders as you manage and drive strategy for our IP-related disputes and litigation matters.
  • Negotiate IP licensing and settlement agreements.
  • Assist and lead efforts to create, improve, and develop scalable processes and procedures related to the handling of IP litigation matters for a rapidly growing company.
  • Advise business stakeholders on litigation risks and issues..
  • Pragmatically weigh legal risks and benefits of complex situations and propose practical solutions with tact and maturity.
  • Review and advise on litigation-related contractual provisions in commercial agreements, including dispute resolution, governing law, venue, arbitration, limitation of liability, and indemnification clauses.
  • Build strong relationships and work cross-functionally with internal stakeholders, including Product, Engineering, Communications, Sales, Security, Finance, and other relevant teams.
  • Champion, role model, and embed Samsara’s cultural principles (Focus on Customer Success, Build for the Long Term, Adopt a Growth Mindset, Be Inclusive, Win as a Team) as we scale globally and across new offices.

Minimum Requirements for the Role:

  • 5+ years of substantive IP litigation experience.
  • Excellent judgment, writing, communication, analytical, organization, and negotiation skills.
  • Strong technology interest and aptitude.
  • Ability to explain complicated concepts in simple terms.
  • Strong organizational skills, flexibility, and comfort working in an extremely fast-paced environment.
  • Interest in being a true partner to our business stakeholders and immersing yourself in the ins and outs of our business and the industry in which we operate.
  • Ability to build, develop and maintain strong cross-functional relationships.
  • A high degree of professional integrity, ethics and sound judgment.
  • Be humble, adaptable and flexible, with a growth mindset and desire to work on a variety of matters.
  • Attitude that no project is too big or too small, with a growth mindset and willingness to explore new areas of expertise.
  • Sense of humor and passion for the job.
  • A J.D. degree from an accredited law school with strong academic credentials
  • Membership in at least one US state bar.
  • Be a licensed attorney

An ideal candidate also has:

  • Experience working at or closely with a tech company 

Samsara’s Compensation Philosophy: Samsara’s compensation program is designed to deliver Total Direct Compensation (based on role, level, and geography) that is at or above market. We do this through our base salary + bonus/variable + restricted stock unit awards (RSUs) for eligible roles.  For eligible roles, a new hire RSU award may be awarded at the time of hire, and additional RSU refresh grants may be awarded annually. 

We pay for performance, and top performers in eligible roles may receive above-market equity refresh awards which allow employees to achieve higher market positioning.

The range of annual base salary for full-time employees for this position is below. Please note that base pay offered may vary depending on factors including your city of residence, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.

$138,338$209,250 USD
