The opportunity

Reporting to the  Director, Supply Chain and Real Estate Law and Legal Operations, this is a primarily commercial legal position providing legal advice on supply chain procurement and management, and related commercial matters (e.g. major categories of supply chain, construction and engineering agreements, corporate service and support agreements, customs, tariffs, and related policy and procedural matters) as required on Canadian and U.S. projects and operational matters across the Natural Gas and Power and Energy Solutions business units. Effective collaboration with corporate/commercial lawyers and other legal colleagues will be required.

What you'll do

  • Provide support, guidance, drafting and legal opinions from a commercial perspective, particularly in respect of category, construction and other supply chain management agreements, issues and strategies

  • Work independently on complex legal matters and projects

  • Negotiate various matters on TC Energy's behalf

  • Provide advice and strategy with respect to early dispute resolution and the drafting of settlement agreements and releases

  • Co-ordinate and manage the provision of legal services with other internal resources, including through AI based solutions and the use of external legal counsel where issues require specific expertise

  • Assist in the development of standardized or complex agreements and policies

  • Provide support to the broader Supply Chain and Real Estate Law and Legal Operations group as required

  • Mentor more junior lawyers on the Supply Chain legal team; and

  • Other tasks as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Law degree from a Canadian accredited law school

  • Membership or eligible for membership to the Alberta Bar (membership or eligible for membership to the Texas Bar would also be an asset); and

  • At least 10 years of relevant commercial and supply-chain legal experience.  Direct experience working as a project lawyer would also be an asset although candidates with a different combination of education and experience may be considered.

  • Strong communication and advocacy skills, both oral and written

  • Strong commercial/business acumen

  • Strong organizational skills and an ability to support diverse client groups and handle multiple files

  • Ability to develop practical business solutions

  • Growth mindset

  • Familiarity with artificial intelligence tools in legal context

  • Demonstrated ability to advise senior management and lead complex legal matters

  • Demonstrated ability to complete complex legal tasks within tight deadlines

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work well both independently as well as in a team environment

  • Experience and understanding of the energy/pipeline industry; and

  • An ability and willingness to travel within North America as required.
