We are seeking an experienced Senior Operations Accountant to join our team in Calgary. Reporting to the Team Lead, Operations Accounting, this role is responsible for leading the analysis and reporting of operating costs, supporting the monthly accounting cycle, and providing strategic insights to Operations and Finance leadership.

The successful candidate will bring deep expertise in operating netbacks, a strong understanding of cost drivers, and the ability to influence business decisions through high-quality financial analysis and cross-functional collaboration.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the monthly operating cost close process, including preparation and review of accruals, validation of incurred costs with field teams, and delivery of accurate, timely reporting with clear variance analysis against plan and prior periods.

  • Partner closely with Field and Production Operations to understand activity, challenge assumptions, and provide actionable insights into operating costs, key drivers, and cost control opportunities.

  • Deliver in-depth analysis of operating expenses and trends, including cost driver analysis and historical lookbacks, to support forecasting, budgeting, and operational decision-making.

  • Oversee field inventory accounting, including monitoring balances, investigating discrepancies, and ensuring accurate material movements and cost recognition.

  • Manage and review property tax schedules and coding, and oversee accounting for utility charges, annual fees, and levies.

  • Identify and implement improvements to operating cost processes, including accrual workflows, coding accuracy, data quality, and internal controls, to enhance reporting reliability and efficiency.

  • Support internal and external audits by coordinating requests, preparing documentation, and addressing inquiries.

  • Provide support across capital and joint venture accounting as required and contribute to cross-functional and finance-led initiatives.

Qualifications:

Education & Experience

  • CPA designation required.

  • Minimum 7–10 years of progressive experience in the Oil & Gas industry, with a strong focus on operations accounting.

  • Advanced experience with Qbyte FM, AFE Aucerna, data cubes, and Maximo (or similar tools).

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong leadership and mentorship capabilities, with the ability to influence and support cross-functional teams.

  • Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills, with a high level of attention to detail.

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with experience presenting to senior stakeholders.

  • Proven ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

  • Advanced proficiency in MS Excel and experience working with large, complex datasets.

  • Self-motivated with a proactive approach to continuous improvement and process optimization.
