Do you want to empower organizations to fairly and equitably hire, promote, retain and compensate their employees? Syndio is a Series-C technology company committed to fairness in the workplace. Fueled by investments of $83M from Bessemer Ventures, Voyager Capital and social change organization Emerson Collective, Syndio is investing in growing our team and products.

This is a critical moment when organizations are looking for ways to take tangible action to fight gender and racial bias, and we believe creating diverse and inclusive workplaces for all starts with workplace equity.

About the role

We are looking for an experienced Senior Backend Software Developer with strong interest or experience in internal service delivery to join our engineering team and collaborate on challenges at a fast-paced startup. Customer success hinges on high-quality platform and application development. Your solid and dependable developments on our software products will have a meaningful impact on helping companies achieve fairness in the workplace.

Why this job is exciting:

  • Collaborate with junior, senior and staff software developers / engineers to design and develop mid to large features and services delivered to Syndio end users and internal customers.
  • Design, implement, and maintain tools for ingesting, transforming, storing, and delivering data to customer-facing applications.
  • Design, implement, and maintain tools governing authentication and access control to the Syndio platform.
  • Build scalable and secure APIs, focusing on backend integrations and ensuring robust data management and security.
  • Mentor junior team members, as well as advocate and lead initiatives for technological enhancements vital to our strategic goals.

What you'll do:

  • Software Engineering Experience: Extensive experience in building reliable, performant, and maintainable backend systems, with a focus on one or more of the following: identity management, authorization and permissions, or bulk data management.
  • Programming Proficiency: Strong skills in backend development with proficiency in at least one modern programming language such as Go (preferred) or Python.
  • Cloud Architecture: Experience in architecting applications on cloud platforms, particularly Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
  • Data Management: Strong experience with data model and schema design, and technologies such as PostgreSQL, Redis, and Cloud PubSub.
  • API Development: Thorough knowledge of API architecture and development.
  • System Scalability: Experience with optimizing back-end architectures for efficient resource efficiency and scalability.
  • Testing Methodologies: Familiarity with current testing methodologies, especially unit testing.
  • Communication Skills: Effective communication capabilities for interacting with both technical and non-technical teams.
  • Team Collaboration: Demonstrated ability to work with cross-functional teams in a collaborative environment.
  • Bonus Points - Experience with or strong interest in event-driven architecture patterns

How you'll do it:

  • You assume positive intent, are humble and eager, expect the best from yourself, value partnership over perfection, and provide grace and understanding in stressful situations
  • You value a remote work environment and know that it requires greater intentionality on your part to build and maintain strong working relationships
  • You currently reside within commuting distance of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Relocation is not currently offered.
    • Kindly note, you must also be eligible to work there legally, as we are NOT able to provide visa support at this time.

Why you'll love it here:

  • Check out our Employee Experience page for more information on our Mission & Values, Work-Life Balance, Pay Transparency, Diversity, Culture, and Benefits.
  • 💰 Competitive Compensation. For this role our base salary is targeted at $140-160k CAD. Final offer amounts are determined by factors such as experience and expertise.
  • 🏆 Syndio Equity. So you can share in Syndio’s success.
  • 🏝 20 days annually. We encourage our team to recharge when they need to, plus paid sick & safe time, compassion leave, and voting leave.
  • 🏦 Pension Contribution
  • 📍 Remote-First (within commuting distance of Calgary) #LI-Remote

Role progression

  • First month: We'll get to know each other! You’ll understand the user problems and priorities and see how our platform can support them. You'll set up and service your development environment and be able to run the entire app and critical workflows locally. Not only that, but you'll also start handling tickets and small feature requests.
  • Second month: You'll deepen your understanding of user pain points and start to form an opinion on necessary improvements in the codebase. Share these insights with the Engineering Manager. Expect an increasing workload, and start providing more input on building complex features.
  • Third month: You’ll be fully ramped up and working at full capacity! You'll share your opinions, mentor junior team members, and independently design, execute, and break down tasks for yourself and other engineers. Now's the time to start proposing technical investments and improvements. Time to innovate!

What you need to know about the Calgary Tech Scene

Employees can spend up to one-third of their life at work, so choosing the right company is crucial, not just for the job itself but for the company culture as well. While startups often offer dynamic culture and growth opportunities, large corporations provide benefits like career development and networking, especially appealing to recent graduates. Fortunately, Calgary stands out as a hub for both, recognized as one of Startup Genome's Top 100 Emerging Ecosystems, while also playing host to a number of multinational enterprises. In Calgary, job seekers can find a wide range of opportunities.
