As a Senior Specialist, you’ll champion the implementation of industry leading practices, guide technical strategy, and help ensure the integrity and sustainability of our operations.You’ll also play a key role in mentoring and developing geotechnical professionals, fostering a culture of technical excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement. Working closely with senior leaders, Geotechnical Managers, regulators, and external partners, you’ll influence key decisions and drive innovation across our assets.

Minimum Requirements:
- Undergraduate degree in Geotechnical, Geological or Civil Engineering
- A minimum 20 years of experience in geotechnical engineering roles in Western Canadian projects, focusing on oil sands operations. (Dam design, construction, and operation)
- Extensive experience in a Technical Supervisory or equivalent external role / experience
- Previous experience as an Engineer of Record (EoR) or Designer of Record (DoR) for large mining dams
- Experience/understanding of CDA Guidelines, AER Directive, MAC Guidelines, GISTM
- Exposure to Major Projects in a consulting engineering environment
- Strong people skills and an ability to work in a team environment with previous experience leading (direct or indirect leadership), mentoring, and coaching team members
- Preference for: Graduate degree or Ph.D. in Geotechnical Engineering would be considered an asset
Responsibilities:
- Conduct work which is consistent with leading geotechnical engineering and dam safety practices and ensure overall technical and governance integrity of the geotechnical work at Suncor
- Provide expert geotechnical advice to Suncor Management in support of the Management decision processes
- Provide expertise in geotechnical engineering regulatory requirements
- Support the development of regulatory applications and relationships with external regulators in a way that builds credibility, optimizes technical guidance, and ensures collaboration and transparency
- Support design work for structures to meet the regulatory, operating, and sustainability requirements
- Support the Geotechnical Engineering team by providing technical expertise, coaching and mentoring
Location and other Key Details:
- This is an office-based role. You will work out of our Calgary head office, located in the Suncor Energy Centre at 150 – 6th Ave S.W.
- Hours of work are typically a 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday, with some additional hours required occasionally to meet critical deadlines or schedules
- Our engineering roles follow internal compensation guidelines, and the pay band will generally be based years of experience and scope of work
- Travel will be required occasionally including visits to active mine areas
- Must be or eligible to register as a professional engineer in Alberta
