About the Role:

As a Staff Product Designer focusing on multi-product onboarding & activation, you will play a pivotal role in enhancing and personalizing the onboarding journey for our diverse customer base—from new customers joining Gusto for the first time, to existing customers looking to adopt new products and plans. Your mission is to guide customers from setup to activation seamlessly, collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver cohesive, intuitive, and delightful experiences. You will leverage your expertise in UX, systems thinking, service design, and content design to develop New User Experience (NUX) flows and patterns that drive product adoption and deliver exceptional value for our customers and our business.

About the Team: The Growth team at Gusto is dedicated to helping customers find, adopt, and engage with our products meaningfully. Our approach prioritizes a user-centric design ethos, ensuring that growth initiatives are backed by value and trust. As a key contributor, you’ll join a collaborative environment with Engineers, Product Managers, Data Scientists, and strategic Marketing and Business partners, focusing on critical touchpoints in the customer journey.

Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day:

  • Design a personalized onboarding experience: Create a seamless and intuitive onboarding process tailored to customer needs, ensuring people can quickly understand, set up, and gain value from our products.
  • Collaborate across teams: Partner with Growth Leads, Mobile, Core Experiences, Sales, Marketing, and product teams to craft an end-to-end journey that considers various channels, device types, and service design elements.
  • Develop impactful NUX patterns: Design and implement user experiences that simplify product adoption, leveraging interactive design elements such as product tours, tooltips, and hands-on tutorials.
  • Optimize the journey: Use A/B testing, customer research, behavioral analytics, and qualitative insights to refine onboarding strategies, improving conversion rates and time-to-value.
  • Ensure consistency: Work with design systems to create scalable, adaptable onboarding components that maintain consistency across multiple products.
  • Holistic service design: Design with marketing, sales, and customer support needs in mind so you can deliver a cohesive and logical flow from first contact to activation.
  • Commitment to craft: Maintain a high standard of excellence in UX, systems-thinking, service design, and content design, ensuring all solutions are both functional and elegant.

Here’s what we're looking for:

  • 8+ years of experience in full-stack design, with a strong focus on onboarding and/or funnel optimization, and systems thinking.
  • Proven experience designing onboarding experiences, particularly for B2B or SaaS products, guiding users through setup, activation, and engagement across multiple interconnected products.
  • Expertise in mapping and simplifying complex workflows, considering various touchpoints across devices, channels, and organizational roles.
  • Deep understanding of B2B customer personas, including decision-makers, administrators, and end-users, with the ability to design for their unique goals and workflows.
  • Proficiency in content design, crafting clear, concise, and actionable in-product copy to support user success.
  • Demonstrated ability to leverage research and analytics coupled with qualitative insights to inform strategies and optimize user journeys.
  • Familiarity with service design principles and experience creating cohesive multi-product ecosystem experiences.
  • Experience with design systems, ensuring scalable and consistent design patterns.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills, with a proven ability to co-lead product strategy and articulate contributions to the product direction.
  • Track record of iterative impact and long-term vision development, achieving UX milestones from initial value to north star objectives.
  • Track record of mentoring and coaching other designers.

Nice to haves:

  • Experience designing NUX experiences tailored to first-time users and returning customers adopting additional features or products.
  • Skilled in creating cross-product experiences and ensuring cohesive NUX patterns across offerings.
  • Expertise in interactive design for engaging onboarding experiences.
  • Familiarity with industries such as HR, Payroll, Healthcare, or Fintech.
