Job Description:

Systems Engineering Technical Leader

As the Systems Engineering Technical Leader, you will be a senior member of Fluence’s systems engineering team in China, responsible for ensuring that large-scale BESS products are integrated, tested, and validated against functional, safety, and performance requirements. This broad role spans product development, prototype integration, lab testing, certification support, and continuous improvement of Fluence’s testing practices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with lab operations teams to identify the system testing infrastructure, capabilities, and resources required to execute product testing successfully at Fluence lab sites in China.

  • Develop high-level system test plans and collaborate with systems engineers to create, refine, and maintain detailed system test cases.

  • Lead system integration activities for product prototype systems before safety certification and system-level testing.

  • Provide clear guidance to lab test execution engineers on system testing procedures, methods, and pass/fail criteria.

  • Drive Jira documentation of system defects, bugs, test failures, and lessons learned during system testing so the broader product engineering team can translate findings into product improvements.

  • Contribute to DFMEAs and FMEAs by incorporating issues, failure modes, and lessons learned during integration and testing.

  • Collaborate with management and cross-functional stakeholders to identify and implement improvements to the system testing process.

  • Contribute to new product requirements and recommend improvements to product architecture or design based on prototype integration and testing experience.

  • Own complex integration strategies across electrical, mechanical, controls, communications, and cloud interfaces.

  • Define verification and validation (V&V) strategies and collaborate with lab and field engineering teams to oversee hardware testing, prototype validation, FAT/SAT protocols, and full qualification.

  • Make testing strategy decisions when equipment, resource, or schedule constraints require prioritizing product variants, test types, or test sequencing.

  • Provide product design expertise to the engineering team during safety certification testing with third-party testing agencies, including standards such as UL 9540 and IEC 62933.

  • Provide engineering input into lab safety procedures for prototype integration, system testing, and certification support activities.

  • Support lab operations teams in technical discussions with Fluence’s third-party lab sites and manufacturing partners when deep product functionality or testing expertise is required.

  • Lead and mentor junior engineers based in China across product development teams, including systems engineering, hardware engineering, and test execution.

  • Support recruiting and hiring for Fluence engineering roles in China by assisting with candidate searches and conducting interviews.

This role requires close collaboration with China-based lab teams and global Fluence engineering stakeholders, with an emphasis on clear technical communication, practical decision-making, and the ability to influence across functions without direct authority.

This role is located in Shanghai and involves up to 25% travel.

  • Extensive experience with utility-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS), power conversion systems (PCS), microgrids, or grid integration.

  • Deep understanding of systems engineering principles, including requirements development, functional decomposition, interface management, system architecture, and verification & validation.

  • Strong technical background spanning electrical, mechanical, controls, embedded, and software systems.

  • Experience developing products compliant with international safety and performance standards, including UL 9540, UL 9540A, IEC 62933, and NFPA 855.
