The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) is responsible for the safe, reliable, and economic planning and operation of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System. We provide open and non-discriminatory access to Alberta’s interconnected power grid and also facilitate Alberta’s competitive wholesale electricity market. We are seeking three full-time Engineers in Training (EITs) to join our EIT New Graduate program. This 2-year program provides four 6-month rotations through various business units involved in the engineering aspects of AESO’s work, which offers a unique full spectrum view from mandate to meter. Assignments are technical in nature, varied, and will include opportunities to work with experienced engineering professionals and other AESO staff in a variety of cross-functional assignments.

Possible assignments include:

  • Assisting with the preparation of power system models and base cases.

  • Conducting power system power flow, stability and short circuit studies for transmission planning and system operations departments.

  • Assisting in carrying out power system outage analysis.

  • Assisting with determination of alternative solutions for identified power system problems.

  • Assisting in the development of applications for power system real-time operations.

  • Assisting with the creation of engineering reports to document study results.

  • Assisting with compliance processes relating to reliability standards and ISO rules.

  • Assisting with the preparation of information for stakeholder meetings.

  • Assisting with preparation of project functional specifications.

  • Assisting with the development of study tools through programming.

  • Preparing single-line drawings and documentation for estimate requests.

  • Providing technical support to various departments.

Upon completion of the rotations, final placement will be made to an engineering position and department.
