The Opportunity

The Power and Energy Solutions (PES) Financial Analytics team is seeking a Financial Analyst to support investment evaluations and business case development across the energy value chain.

Reporting to the Manager, PES Financial Analytics, you will lead the development of robust financial models and partner with cross-functional teams to assess opportunities, identify risks and value drivers, and translate complex analysis into clear business recommendations.

This role will be focused on financial and commercial analysis in the power sector, alongside low-carbon development projects and investment opportunities in emerging technologies.

What you will do
  • Lead the development of financial models to evaluate power, low‑carbon, and emerging technology opportunities, incorporating key value drivers, risk factors, and commercial structures
  • Evaluate risk-adjusted returns and analyze the impact of commercial structures and contractual arrangements on value, risk exposure, and strategic alignment
  • Synthesize complex analysis into clear, concise materials—including valuation summaries, business cases, and recommendations—for leadership and decision-makers, clearly articulating key assumptions, risks, and value-enhancement opportunities
  • Partner with cross-functional teams, including engineering, operations, accounting, legal, and tax, to align inputs, assumptions, and considerations in support of comprehensive evaluations
  • Identify and implement opportunities to apply AI-enabled tools and automation to improve the speed, consistency, and quality of evaluation workflows
  • Support ad hoc analytics requests related to corporate and business-unit strategy and investment opportunities
Minimum qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Engineering, Economics, Accounting, or a related field
  • Approximately 6–10 years of experience in financial analysis and investment evaluation, including roles in valuation, corporate finance, or investment analysis
  • Demonstrated experience developing and applying financial models to support investment evaluation and decision-making
  • Strong understanding of energy asset economics, with a focus on power markets and key drivers of cash flows and risk
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to synthesize complex financial, commercial, and technical information into clear, decision-relevant insights
  • Proven ability to communicate complex analysis effectively – verbal and written – and tailor messaging for audiences ranging from technical stakeholders to senior leadership
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel and PowerPoint, with experience translating complex analysis and large datasets into clear, executive-ready materials
  • Experience working in cross-functional environments, with the ability to coordinate inputs and collaborate effectively with engineering, commercial, legal, accounting, tax, risk, and related teams
Preferred qualifications
  • Experience evaluating power-related investments or opportunities, with familiarity across generation, storage, and related infrastructure
  • Experience assessing commercial structures for power assets, including offtake arrangements and risk management strategies
  • Working knowledge of North American power markets, including regulatory and policy frameworks that influence project economics, risk, and returns
  • Experience working with low-carbon assets and infrastructure (e.g., CCUS, hydrogen, or other energy transition opportunities), including associated commercial and development considerations
  • Experience applying data, analytics, or AI-enabled tools to improve the efficiency, consistency, or transparency of financial analysis (e.g., automation, data preparation, or research synthesis)
  • Completion of a professional financial designation (e.g., CFA, CPA) or a relevant advanced degree

What you need to know about the Calgary Tech Scene

Employees can spend up to one-third of their life at work, so choosing the right company is crucial, not just for the job itself but for the company culture as well. While startups often offer dynamic culture and growth opportunities, large corporations provide benefits like career development and networking, especially appealing to recent graduates. Fortunately, Calgary stands out as a hub for both, recognized as one of Startup Genome's Top 100 Emerging Ecosystems, while also playing host to a number of multinational enterprises. In Calgary, job seekers can find a wide range of opportunities.
