The Opportunity 

Our Pipeline Integrity department is currently seeking a Quantitative Risk Engineer to join our Risk & Technical Governance team, based in Calgary, AB. 

 

This position is responsible for supporting TCE’s quantitative risk assessment (QRA) process on over 90,000 km of natural gas pipelines across Canada, USA and Mexico. It will provide the opportunity to expand knowledge of pipeline QRA and support risk-based integrity maintenance decisions to help ensure safe and reliable pipeline operations. 
 

What you will do  

  • Complete annual quantitative risk assessments on over 90,000 km of natural gas pipelines across Canada, USA and Mexico 

  • Perform rigorous validation of risk estimates using proven statistical and data analytic methods 

  • Maintain and update threat algorithms in Python on a major cloud-based platform 

  • Continually work to improve the accuracy and granularity of risk estimates 

  • Leverage quantitative risk estimates to support optimized risk-based decisions 

  • Develop and execute novel integrity analyses using probabilistic (reliability-based), advanced statistical or other data analytical methods 

  • Support advanced modelling of risk mitigation and long-term forecasting of risk growth 

  • Perform qualitative and quantitative demonstration of ALARP risks 

  • Write required reports and help maintain risk management standards and procedures 

  • Participate in industry research projects, standard committees, and other external activities 

  • Interact and collaborate with a variety of teams including Pipeline Integrity Threat Management 

 

Minimum Qualifications   

  • Post-Secondary Degree in Engineering 

  • Registered, or eligible to register, with APEGA as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in good standing 

  • Seven (7) years of progressive experience (including graduate studies) 

  • Experience in quantitative risk assessment, probabilistic analysis, and data analytics 

  • Competent programming in Python or comparable programming language 

  • Knowledge of pipeline integrity threat management practices 

  • Strong oral and written business communication skills 

 

Preferred Qualifications   

  • Master’s or PhD. in a related field 

  • Experience in Machine Learning and other advanced analysis methodologies 

  • Knowledge of Canadian and US pipeline regulations (such as CSA Z662, 49 CFR 192, etc.) 

  • Demonstrated project management skills, including agile project management
