The Senior Accountant contributes to the success of Sur La Table by performing the complex accounting and analytical functions needed to ensure accurate financial results. This position requires research in response to internal and external inquiries, analyzing financial information as part of the financial reporting process, audit participation and excellent communication skills. The Senior Accountant relies on experience and judgment to accomplish goals. The Senior Accountant reports to the Accounting Manager.

What you get to do every day:

  • Ownership of assigned expense groups
  • Ensure accuracy of month end journal entries, perform variance analysis and provide partnership with business owners during monthly review meetings
  • Expense groups can include Shared Services, Fixed Assets, Royalties
  • Reconcile and maintain accounts to ensure general ledger accuracy and completeness
  • Utilize advanced Excel skills, including vlookups and pivot tables to analyze financial data and support decision making processes
  • Collaborate with cross functional teams to support various workflows such as annual budgets and monthly forecasts for assigned accounts; Analyze forecast versus actual performance, investigate and explain variances
  • Responsible for Month End Financial Reporting/Uploading to Parent Company
  • Prepare required schedules, documentation and respond to inquiries for all audits
  • Identify process improvement opportunities, consult with management on prioritization and drive projects to completion
  • Ensure process documentation is maintained and up-to-date; Provide training on key backup tasks
  • Serve as back up support for other GL Team processes as assigned
  • Other projects and ad hoc analysis as required

What you bring to the role:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or equivalent field, CPA a plus
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a diversified accounting role or audit firm required, preferably in a retail/merchandise driven environment
  • Working knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) including experience in accounting research and implementation of new processes
  • Demonstrated experience performing complex analysis, conducting research and resolving problems proactively and independently
  • Strong analytical skills with attention to detail and accuracy
  • Continuously seek opportunities for learning and professional development, while being receptive to feedback and coaching
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel & Microsoft Office proficiency
