About this opportunity:

Reporting to the Director and Assistant General Counsel – Canadian Downstream Legal, the Senior Legal Counsel will be responsible to provide knowledgeable, practical and timely legal support on a wide variety of commercial agreements and legal matters for Cenovus’ Business Development – Pipelines and Terminals and Marine Business groups. The ideal candidate will have strong business acumen with the ability to translate complex legal principles into practical and effective business solutions.

What you’ll do:

  • Possess business and operational familiarity across a wide range of matters including crude, condensate, natural gas and NGL infrastructure, transportation, transloading, storage and handling of commodities under pipeline, terminal, rail and truck modes.

  • Work directly with Cenovus’ Business Development – Pipelines and Terminals team to provide strategic legal advice and review, draft and negotiate various logistics and infrastructure related commitments including construction and development agreements, service and operating agreements, pipeline, rail, truck and marine transportation and terminal agreements and other transportation arrangements.

  • Participate in the negotiation and implementation of joint ventures, partnerships and other business combinations as well as acquisitions and divestitures within the business area. 

  • Review, draft and participate in the negotiation of other energy related commitments including power purchase agreements and cogeneration facility agreements.

  • Work collaboratively with Cenovus’ US Legal team on cross-border pipeline and transportation matters.

  • Engage and manage external counsel on commercial matters related to the business.

Who you are:

Our ideal candidate will have the following minimum requirements:

  • Legally authorized to work in Canada.

  • Minimum 10 years post-call legal experience.

  • Member of a Canadian law society.

  • Experience with energy commodity marketing, pipeline and transportation arrangements gained through private practice at a top-tier law firm or in-house environment.

  • Experience with marine transportation would be an asset.
