TAR’s mission is to power intelligence for the world. We are building the world’s first off-grid power plant for data centers powered by renewable technologies.
We firmly believe AI should be built in the US for the benefit of all people. For that, power must be fast, clean and scalable. We are singularly focused on delivering GW-scale power faster than anyone has ever done, by rethinking every layer of the stack.
We vertically integrate to solve every bottleneck, from racking systems to power electronics to dispatch algorithms to on-site construction.
Leave your mark on the future of civilization-scale energy infrastructure.
CompanyTAR is both a hardware and software company, we are building out massive, critical, physical infrastructure. TAR is working directly with one of the largest compute providers to scale and deploy 5GWs by 2028.
We operate on…
High ownership. High Agency. Own project end-to-end. Great people don’t need to be managed.
Speed. We achieve great things on incredible timelines. We push ourselves to go faster.
First principles. No ego. No hierarchy. Challenge every assumption.
Passion. Solving the energy problem is one of the largest challenges that faces the world now and in the future.
TAR's off-grid power plants are built from PV, battery storage, and power conversion equipment that must carry data center load with no utility grid behind it. Before a technology goes into one of those plants, it gets proven at TAR's test site in West Texas.
As Technology Solutions Engineer, you are the engineer for that test site. You own the technical evaluation and integration of the power systems technologies TAR tests there: PV, BESS, inverters and power conversion systems, and the LV and MV equipment that ties them together. You will take a technology from first vendor conversation through specification, installation, testing, and field validation, and give design and project teams a clear answer on what to build with, how to integrate it, and what risk comes with it.
This is a hands-on role: you will spend 25-50% of your time on site in West Texas, and you will often be the one installing, energizing, and troubleshooting the equipment yourself. You will partner closely with Power Systems design, procurement, and project delivery, while retaining ownership of the test site's engineering, technology recommendations, and the technical specifications behind them. Detailed design of record and construction execution for production plants sit with design and project teams; your work defines the equipment and architecture they build on.
ResponsibilitiesOwn engineering for TAR's West Texas test site as its accountable engineer, responsible for everything installed, tested, and operated there, from layout and single-line diagrams through energization and day-to-day operation.
Plan and run test campaigns for PV, BESS, inverter, and power conversion technologies, defining test procedures, instrumentation, data collection, and acceptance criteria, and turning results into clear recommendations on what TAR deploys.
Design the test site's electrical systems and equipment integrations, including DC and AC configurations, LV and MV interconnections, grounding, and protection, so the site stays safe, reconfigurable, and representative of TAR's off-grid plants.
Lead installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting of new equipment on site, working hands-on alongside electricians and vendor field teams and performing installs yourself where qualified, while holding the line on safe work practices such as LOTO and NFPA 70E.
Write technical specifications and evaluation criteria for modules, batteries, PCS and inverters, transformers, and MV switchgear, and lead technical review of vendor proposals, submittals, and deviations.
Model system performance, including energy yield, BESS sizing and degradation, load flow, short circuit, and power quality, using tools such as PVsyst, ETAP, PSCAD, MATLAB/Simulink, or Python, and validate those models against field data from the test site.
Analyze power electronics behavior in the field, including inverter controls, grid-forming operation, harmonics, transient response, and protection coordination, and translate findings into equipment and system requirements for islanded operation.
Own the technical relationship with equipment manufacturers, from factory acceptance testing through on-site vendor support, and feed test-site results back into specifications, reference designs, and equipment standards.
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering; MS in Electrical Engineering with a focus on power systems or power electronics strongly preferred.
2 to 3 years of engineering experience on PV and/or BESS projects or products, at any scale: residential, C&I, utility-scale, or microgrid.
Comfort with hands-on field work: installing, testing, and troubleshooting electrical equipment in outdoor, remote site conditions, with sound judgment around energized systems.
Working knowledge of power electronics, including inverter and converter topologies, PCS operation, and their control and protection behavior.
Hands-on LV and MV design experience: single-line diagrams, equipment and conductor sizing, grounding, and protection.
Familiarity with relevant codes and standards, such as NEC, IEEE 1547 and 2800, UL 1741 and 9540, and NFPA 855.
Proficiency with at least one power systems or PV/BESS modeling tool, such as PVsyst, ETAP, PSCAD, MATLAB/Simulink, or Python.
Demonstrated ability to work independently: you can take an open technical question, define the analysis, and deliver a defensible recommendation without step-by-step direction.
Clear written and verbal communication, with the ability to explain technical tradeoffs plainly to engineers, vendors, and leadership.
Ability to work from Austin and travel to TAR's West Texas test site 25-50% of the time.
Licensed electrician (journeyman or master), or equivalent hands-on electrical installation experience, so you can perform installs yourself.
Experience building, operating, or running tests at a technology test site, pilot plant, or lab.
Experience with grid-forming inverters, microgrids, or islanded and off-grid power systems.
Exposure to data center electrical infrastructure or other large, critical loads.
OEM, integrator, or vendor-side experience with inverters, batteries, or power conversion equipment.
EIT or PE licensure.
